When Your Friend Becomes Your Co-Worker

True tales of the good, the bad and the ugly

By Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com writer

There's a time in most people's lives when working with their friends seems like a dream come true. Seeing each other all day, every day; exchanging horror stories about the boss you share; multiple lunches, happy hours and company events -- what could be better?

For some people, nothing. But for many, nothing could be worse.

What happens when your friend becomes your co-worker? Perhaps a better starting place is asking the question ofhow your friend became your co-worker. What happens when you recommend a friend for a job?

Recommending a friend or family member for a position at your company is tricky. On one hand, if your friend does a great job, it reflects positively on you. On the other hand, if his or her performance is less than exemplary, that reflects on you, too. Not to mention the effect recommending (or not recommending) an acquaintance could have on your friendship and your reputation at work.

"If your friend does a good job, it can help your reputation at work. You will be seen as having excellent judgment, because this is your friend and you suggested [her] for the job," says Jan Yager, author of "Who's That Sitting at My Desk? Workship, Friendship, or Foe?" "If you recommend someone and your analysis is a mismatch with that individual's abilities or with how he or she fits in with the company, it can negatively impact on the one doing the recommending."

We asked our readers about a time when they recommended a friend for a job. Here, they share their stories -- the good, bad and the ugly.

The good
When I first crossed over into PR, friends from my TV days marveled at how lifestyle-friendly my job is. I decided to share the wealth, getting my good friend Krista hired as a publicist. I knew I was taking a big risk -- if it didn't work, how could our friendship handle her being let go? Would she blame me? I took the risk. It's been almost two years now and Krista is one of our leading publicists. It's also been great for our friendship because now that we don't have TV news in common, we have PR. It's felt so good to help her get a mom-friendly job and in return, she has wowed our CEO.

--Valery Hodes, vice president, Orca Communications Unlimited

I have an Internet marketing company, Market Conversion. I hired my best friend about a year ago as a consultant. It has been such an amazing experience, that she is now my business partner. I know she is special. She cared about our business as much as I did from the beginning. Because of our close relationship, we are able to talk openly and honestly, even when it's not pretty. I appreciate that when either of us say or do something, the other is able to offer constructive criticism without emotional backlash. It is truly a great relationship.

-- Denalee Bell, Market Conversion

I have a friend who I babysat for several years when I was in high school. After she graduated from college, she decided she wanted to move to the Washington D.C. area, which happens to be my residence. Her father reached out to me and asked that I take care of her if possible, keeping my eye out for any jobs. I reached out to my top client and called in a favor with one of the managers. He looked at her résumé and said "Greg, she really doesn't fit our position, however if you're 100 percent confident in her abilities, I'll sneak her in." She's now been with that company for five years, and she's in a position that takes most people at least 10 years to reach. Recently I had dinner with that manager, and within 20 minutes, he mentioned how thankful he was that he took a chance on her, and said if ever I need another favor, he'd be more than happy to oblige.

-- Greg Gary, managing director for Technisource

The bad
One day, at the end of class, a student asked to speak to me privately. As she spoke of her divorce, her children and her low-paying job, tears streamed down her face. Sympathy overtook me and I tried to comfort her by saying that a good friend of mine, in the movieindustry, was looking to hire a secretary. Salaries tend to be higher in the industry and my student was thrilled. Unfortunately, she did not perform well during the interview. The experience led my friend to forestall all future referrals.

-- Marlene Caroselli, Ed.D., keynoter, corporate trainer, author

I had a friend I'd known for 25 years -- someone who'd lived with me for free after she relocated, whose wedding invitations I addressed for her, who I'd traveled with -- who I got a job for at the small company where I worked. I was the director of conference managementand she ended up as the director of operations, at a company of about 20 employees. After being there for a year, she engineered a "reorganization" that resulted in the elimination of my position. She never said a word leading up to it, and I was given only 24 hours notice that I was being laid off. She never bothered to follow up with me to see how I felt about it. I'll definitely think twice before I recommend another friend for a job at the same company where I work.

-- Michelle J. Taunton, CMP

The ugly
A friend asked me to get her a job in the [modeling] business. Although she had no experience, she was very beautiful and spoke Spanish as well as English, so I thought that with training, she would work well with our Latin accounts. What I did not count on was that she needed no training in sleeping her way to the top. Within months, she had been "promoted" past me and a company vice president was getting a divorce.

-- Beverly Solomon, creative director, musee-solomon

I did get a friend a job once and will NEVER do it again. I was a program manager for a defense contracting agency and we needed a new administrative assistant in my department. I was told by a congregation member that our mutual friend was in need of a new job and she was very qualified on paper, so we brought her in for an interview. I agreed that I could be a personal reference for her and based on my reputation, it was enough to get her the job. They never checked her other references.

It was a nightmare from the first day when she showed up two hours late without calling and then left to go to lunch an hour early. Over the next few weeks she got progressively worse. Her supervisor spoke with her to no avail, so I stepped in. I told her that she had two weeks to make noticeable improvements or she would not be kept after her probationary period was up.

She called my Father (yes, she told my daddy on me) and several congregational elders to tell them that I was threatening her because I was jealous, and that she didn't feel safe. When the time came to let her go, I made sure that I sat in on her exit interview, in which they enumerated the many times that she was late to work, her poor job performance and her general attitude. When asked if she had any questions or wanted to say anything, she looked at me and said, "I thought you were my friend and had my back on this."

To this day, I will not hire people that I know. The only people who have a personal relationship with me that are in the company are my children -- and they know that I will fire them quicker than any other employee.

-- Andrea Frayser, founder/CEO, ANDE Cosmetics & Natural Products

I got my sister a job and now we work more closely together (I'm her boss's boss). I've been very careful at work. I never hired her or protected her job. In fact, twice I had to tell her manager I thought they were giving her too generous a raise and lowered it. But it has impacted our personal relationship. Work is always there. And right now is the worst ... she isghost-writing a book that will come out in my name -- and she's the big sister. It also affects family time. At Thanksgiving, she was telling our dad she was worried about job security and hoped "they" didn't fire her. I, of course, am part of "they." She also doesn't take feedback from me like she does from her direct boss or other editors. People do tell me I'm tougher on her than others. I guess I worry too much about favoring her and the pendulum swings the other way. It is tough but we're both committed to it and we talk about the issues as they come up -- and try not to involve anyone else.

Should You Try Self-employment? 12 Things to Consider

By Martha E. Mangelsdorf, author of "Strategies for Successful Career Change: Finding Your Very Best Next Work Life"

Many people dream of someday being the boss -- by being self-employed.  But how do you know if self-employment is right for you or not?

On the plus side, being self-employed may allow you some more flexibility and freedom to make your own decisions -- and if you work from or near home, a better commute. But there are negatives, too. Self-employment can involve stress, unpredictable income, risk -- and the challenge of obtaining benefits like health insurance on your own. Think of the pros and cons this way: If you're self-employed, you can decide when and if to take a vacation day -- but no one will pay you if you do.

If you're thinking about working for yourself, it's a good idea to talk to other people who have (or have had) a business similar to the one you're trying to start. And you'll want to do lots of research -- both into the market you're considering entering and into general small-businesstopics such as record-keeping and tax obligations.

Even if you're simply considering starting a one-person business doing the kind of work you already do -- say, starting your own business as a handyman or graphic designer after doing that kind of work as an employee for years -- you still need to educate yourself about the practical realities of self-employment. Here are 12 questions to consider:

1. How flexible are you -- and how comfortable are you with uncertainty? How do you feel about having a wide range of tasks in your work?

2. How high are your fixed expenses -- and what kind of financial safety net and resources does your household have (such as savings or income from a spouse's job)?

3. Is the market you plan to enter growing over the long term?

4. Who will your competitors be, and what will be your competitive advantage -- the thing that makes you stand out in the marketplace?

5. How do you feel about selling and marketing for yourself and your business?

6. How can you test your business ideas? Are there ways you can first test your business model -- the way you think your business will make money -- to get a sense of whether it will work?

7. Are you self-motivated and self-disciplined?

8. Have you educated yourself about small-business topics and resources?

9. Do you have an estimate of how much money you'll need to start your business and pay living expenses while your business is getting launched? Do you have that capital? If not, how might you obtain it? What will you do if your expenses are significantly higher or income significantly lower than you forecast?

10. Who do you know (former colleagues, friends, family, community members) who might be helpful to you as you seek to get your business started?

11. What will you do for health insurance?

12. Are you familiar with the licenses, permits, and insurance you may need for the type of business you'll be starting? Do you understand the tax and record-keeping responsibilities you'll have?

Don't have all the answers to those questions? Don't despair.  There are lots of resources out there that can help educate you about starting your own business. SCORE (www.score.org) is a  nonprofit association that provides free advice to people thinking about starting a business, and Small Business Development Centers around the United States also offer information and resources for people who own or are starting a small business. You can find out more about the SBDC program on the Web site of the U.S. Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov).

As you explore self-employment topics, keep in mind that, if you are currently out of work and job hunting, you may be interested in transitional self-employment --- even if your long-term goal is to find your next full-time job.  In an uncertain economic environment, organizations may be slow to hire full-time workers -- but still have work that needs doing. As a result, you may in some cases be able to find project or freelance work in your field, as a self-employed independent contractor, more quickly than you can find a full-time job.

While transitional self-employment may not be ideal if you're seeking a full-time job, project work can help you bring in income, make contacts and build additional skills while you're job hunting. So even if self-employment isn't right for you in the long-term, it can sometimes be helpful in the short-term, during a job search.

10 boring phrases you should cut from your resume

I ran across a piece by the esteemed Liz Ryan, a 25-year HR veteran and former Fortune 500 VP, that just made me cringe with recognition. She wrote about those trite phrases that inevitably make their way into our resumes. It’s one of those things many of us do by rote without considering that they are red flags for, as Ms. Ryan puts it, the “vocabulary challenged.”

Before I list the phrases, let me explain a little about why they should be run out of town on a rail. Have you ever sat through a speech by a company executive who seems to communicate solely in business cliches? He’ll speak of synergy andparadigm shifts and value-added propositions until you want to impale yourself on the nearest sharp object. And the only value you take away from a speech like that is that you are, in fact, capable of a boredom-induced vegetative state.

Cliched forms of speech are crutches for the uncreative. And the frequency of their usage make them absolutely meaningless.

So do you want your resume to say, above everything else, that you are incapable of forming a new thought? No, you don’t. You also don’t want the people reviewing your resume to gloss over these trite phrases and not give you a chance. That’s why you should strike every occurrence of the following from your resume:

  • Results-oriented professional
  • Cross-functional teams
  • More than [x] years of progressively responsible experience
  • Superior (or excellent) communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Met or exceeded expectations
  • Proven track record of success
  • Works well with all levels of staff
  • Team player
  • Bottom-line orientation

Find better ways of saying these things. After all, just because you think of yourself as a results-oriented professional does not necessarily make it fact. Why not just list your actual results? You have a proven track record? Proven by whose standards? And if there is a “record” of it, why don’t you just give me its contents?

Met or exceeded expectations? Whose expectations? The guy down the street at the coffee shop? Tell me instead about the time you had to lead a project with a seemingly impossible timeline and budget.

I think you see where I’m going with this.

How to De-Fang a Toxic Boss

By Richard S. Gallagher

How many people out there hate their bosses? And how many have the luxury of simply voting with their feet, and leaving? Everyone faces a toxic boss at some point in their career and must quickly learn how to de-fang.

Toxic bosses are often energy vampires who drain our morale, creativity and productivity. Ironically, they often feel they are doing the right thing in the process. So when you react to them, you get dragged into a tug-of-war that too often leads to a one-way ticket out the door. It's a lose-lose situation for everyone.

At the same time, the right communications skills can provide a great antidote to these toxic bosses. Here's how:

Learn how your boss sees the world. Does your boss go to bed every night dreaming of new ways to be mean and cruel? If he does, it's time to leave, however, the reality is that most toxic bosses simply have a warped view of managing people. What you see as criticism, they see as "holding people accountable." What you see as politics, they see as "motivating people to perform." And what you think is pointless nastiness is, in their mind, "avoiding a country-club atmosphere where people slack off."

So how do you learn what's behind their snarkiness? Simple: You ask them. Here are some examples of questions you might use:

- "What would the ideal department look like for you?"

- "What kinds of things frustrate you about our team?"

- "What would be the single biggest thing I could do better this year?"

Validate the boss's view of the world. This part feels like sucking on a lemon for most people, but it is the key to changing your boss's toxic behavior. (When was the last time you responded positively to criticism?) Here you are not out to agree with your boss or "kiss up" to her. Your goal is to make it clear you understand her, so that she will then listen to you. Try these on for size:

Tillie Toxic: "I wish people would stop slacking off and get to work around here."

You: "Good point, it is frustrating when people don't perform like you wish they did."

Peter Picky: "You never do this task right."

You: "I don't want you to settle for less than the best. Let's discuss this."

Does it feel funny to say things like these to a boss who acts like Darth Vader? Of course it does. But when you say them, you accomplish something extremely valuable: You create a safe space to start talking about changing the boss's intimidating ways.

Offer an alternative. Here is where you close in for the kill. Offer your boss what he wants, while presenting him with a neutral, factual way to get there -- by treating you better! Here's one example:

"I want to give you everything you want in the future. At the same time, I find it difficult to do that when I am constantly criticized. It makes it harder for me to do my best. Where could we go from here?"

Now you are in productive dialogue, and can start negotiating a win-win solution as adults. Remember that you have to use facts and not feelings here. Telling your boss to "share performance expectations" or "talk to me first before you criticize my work" is OK, but asking him to "stop being a jerk" is provocative, not to mention unclear.

With the right words, you can often achieve what seems impossible: Get your toxic boss to change, using a painless conversation that never puts him or her on the defensive. In the process, you will gain interpersonal and leadership skills that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

How to Learn Anything on the Web

Looking to start a business, get a degree or learn Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance? The Web has a class, video or tutorial to help you do it. Here's where to get started.

How to Learn Anything on the Web // Doris Day in the movie "Teacher's Pet" (Image courtesy of PC World)
A tutorial or class for almost everything and anything is available online these days. Whether you're looking to beef up your résumé with some new skills, to get a degree while waiting for the job market to pick up, or simply to have a little fun learning something new, the Web has a wealth of educational resources -- many of them free.

To give you some ideas, we've put together a list of sites in several categories, from skills for budding entrepreneurs and learning foreign languages to gourmet cooking and the choreography for Michael Jackson's iconic "Thriller" dance.
You can always Google for anything you don't see here, but be careful as you click. In researching this story, I ran into many sites that either tried to sell me classes (with little or no real free instruction) or were infested with pop-ups and adware. Anti-malware software is a must. (See PC World's free downloads of anti-malware programs.)
Get a business up and running
How to Learn Anything on the Web // B-Plans.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
So you have a business in mind? Start with a business plan that outlines the specifics of how you intend to make money -- essential for attracting investors and useful for your own reality checks. BPlans.com, run byPaloAlto Software (creators of Business Plan Pro software) offers dozens of articles, sample plans and templates to help you get going. This is one of the few sites that, while it does market a product (you need its software to edit a sample plan and use it for your own enterprise), delivers a slew of genuinely useful content for free. (And you can always simply re-create the sample plan using Word and Excel.)
Once you've launched your business, you'll have to keep financial records. But even if you use software such as Quickbooks, it's a good idea to understand how basic accounting works. Small-business consultant Dave Marshall's Bean Countersite features free tutorials on basic business accounting and bookkeeping.
And because so many aspects of business require presentation skills, it's useful to have a working knowledge of Microsoft's PowerPoint. About.com's Presentation Software site provides a Beginner's Guide to PowerPoint that gathers 11 tutorials to get you going.
How to Learn Anything on the Web // LearnWebDesignOnline.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
Your business will need a Web site, too. You can pay someone a lot of money to create it, but if you would like to dig into the complexities of modern Web design,LearnWebDesignOnline.com is a good place to start, with links to tutorials, videos and books on all aspects of site creation. Another resource is SiteGround, a Web hosting company that provides an impressive tutorials page for learning about both Web hosting in general and a wide array of specific applications for content management and site creation (WordPress, Dreamweaver and the like).
If you're interested in putting together a news site, J-Learning.org provides guidance on everything from blogging tools and multimedia creation to search-engine optimization (SEO) and legal issues -- all for free.
To help bring visitors to your site, you'll need to learn the basics of SEO. Search consultants SEOmoz's free Beginner's Guide is a good place to start.
Improve your tech skills
OK, time out for a little self-promotion. For general hardware upgrades, setup instruction and software tips, look no farther than PC World's own How-To page. Organized by category, there's an amazing wealth of guidance (in print, video and slide shows) for everything from swapping out a PC's processor to gettingMicrosoft Office to work better.
How to Learn Anything on the Web // Lynda.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
However, for professional in-depth training in specific applications, Lynda.com has established itself as the go-to place, with thousands of videos and tutorial files for hundreds of applications. It's not free, but if you're serious about learning a complicated application, its subscription-based fees are a good value. (Read PC World's recent review of Lynda.com.)

Have you ever wanted to explore the mysteries of computer programming? You can find a slew of programming tutorials online, but I like British programmer Alan Gauld's Learning to Program, an online version of a book he's written. It's not particularly slick, but he writes clearly and accessibly, and he uses Python, which experts tell me is a good programming language to start with.
Formal education
How to Learn Anything on the Web // Sloan-C Catalog (Image courtesy of PC World)
The Internet has turned distance learning into a reality: Today, you can get all sorts of degrees and professional certificates through online courses. But not all online learning institutions are created equal. To avoid scams, start your search for Web-based higher education at The Sloan Consortium's Sloan-C Catalog. It's a list of degree and certificate programs offered by regionally accredited institutions that have become consortium members (either because they've received grant support from the respected Alfred P. Sloan Foundation or through a peer-review process). You can search by discipline, type of degree or certificate, state, or institution name.
If you or someone you know wants to earn a GED (General Educational Development) credential (the equivalent of a high-school diploma), learn about the process from the organization that administers the GDE program, TheAmerican Council on Education. You can't take the test online, but dozens of sites offer to prep you -- and many of them look pretty sleazy, so I'd stick with the council's links to practice tests and educational resources.
How to Learn Anything on the Web // YouTube EDU (Image courtesy of PC World)
If you don't care about getting a degree and simply want to broaden your horizons, head over to YouTube EDU, a very cool YouTube subsite devoted to videos of interviews, courses and lectures from professors at top colleges and universities. Some are mostly course promos (such as Carnegie Mellon physics professor Barry Luokkala's description of his Science and Science Fiction course) but some have real content (such as this MIT course on creating compilers).
Learn a foreign language
It's easy to find sites that sell foreign-language instruction online. But here are some neat ones that don't charge for instruction and also offer audio clips:
How to Learn Anything on the Web // Chinese-Tools.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
Chinese (Mandarin): Chinese-Tools.com, the English-language version of a site run by a native French speaker who has lived in China for six years, is a fantastic resource. It not only has audio clips (crucial since Chinese depends on tone and inflection as well as simple pronunciation), but also calligraphy instruction.

French: About.com's French Language site provides lessons for beginners as well as interesting extras including sections on idiomatic expressions and typical Gallic gestures.
Italian: Oggi e Domani (which means "today and tomorrow" in Italian) focuses on conversations in its lesson-based approach.
Russian: I found a couple of sites that seem to be duking it out for supremacy in free online Russian-language instruction: Russian Lessons.net and Learning Russian.net. Of the two, Learning Russian.net looks slicker, but Russian Lessons.net appears to have more resources.
Spanish: 123TeachMe offers Spanish lessons for beginners, advanced students and tourists (conversational Spanish).
Life skills
How to Learn Anything on the Web // WikiHow.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
Some things you just can't learn in traditional classrooms. Real Simple has tons of how-tos for around-the house skills -- I like the Daily Quick-Cleaning Checklist, which promises to get your pad presentable in less than half an hour. For the truly domestically challenged,WikiHow has a page on how to make your bed.

EmilyPost.com, the Web home of the Emily Post Institute, does get a little heavy-handed on selling books by the late doyenne of good manners and her descendants, but there are lots of free articles that provide advice on specific etiquette dilemmas.
And if you're looking to make dinner with whatever's in your refrigerator, simply enter the ingredients into the search fields of FoodNetwork.com, Epicurious orRecipeSource (formerly SOAR, or the Searchable Online Archive of Recipes). For really great how-tos (not to mention recipes and juried product and equipment ratings), consider investing $35 a year (less if you subscribe in print, too) in the online version of Cook's Illustrated, the ad-free Consumer Reports of cooking.
Need help with your finances? Motley Fool is one of the oldest and best sites to learn about investing and personal finance (and its discussion boards are great, too). If you're looking ahead to retirement, the Labor Department's Consumer Information on Retirement page answers a lot of questions on private pensions, 401(k) accounts and the like.
Have some fun
How to Learn Anything on the Web // ChessDryad.com (Image courtesy of PC World)
Learn to play a game: ChessDryad.com's How to Play Chess page will get you from learning the mechanics of the game to classic moves, with primers and flash animations. Veteran bridge author Richard Pavlicek has put hisBridge Basics textbook online for people wishing to learn the popular card game. For neophyte poker players, Charles Bloom has put up a Texas Hold'em primer.
How to Learn Anything on the Web // "Eslowoski's" YouTube video on skateboarding (Image courtesy of PC World)
For sports (or anything else highly physical and visual), you can't beat YouTube: For example, I found dozens of skateboarding how-tos, but the one I actually thought I could learn from was this unpolished but accessible effortcredited to one "Eswolowski" and posted by a user named tevens22.

However, not all sports stuff is on YouTube. Aspiring soccer moms and pops should check out How to Play Soccer, which not only teaches the rules of the game, but offers tips for parents who serve as coaches or spectators.
Showbiz stuff
Aspiring musicians, dancers and filmmakers can also find instruction online. SoYouWanna.com offers a guide for making low-budget movies.
Like to sing along in perfect harmony? ChoralWiki maintains a database of free choral sheet music. If your garage band needs help figuring out the guitar solo in Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing," head to 911tabs, a very nifty search engine for tablatures (musical annotations showing fingerings for specific pop and rock songs). You can search by song and by instrument.
How to Learn Anything on the Web // Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (Image courtesy of PC World)
Again, YouTube shines when it comes to teaching a musical instrument. But perhaps the coolest YouTube how-to project for the performing arts is Inez Markeljevic's 40-video tutorial for learning the dance of the zombies in Michael Jackson's classic "Thriller" video.

Created in hopes of setting a world record for the most people performing the dance simultaneously around the world (see Markeljevic's site, Thrill The World, for more on this), the video tutorials break the song into sections and then into steps with mnemonic aids to remind you of what you should be doing. I'm already up to section 3!

Asahi Camera.

Nikkor!

Canon Digital
